No share for Murcia as Spain unveils €1 billion road upgrade package
The Ministry of Transport says a second €600 million package is on the way, but there's no guarantee the Region will benefit

The Region of Murcia is feeling a bit of a sting after being left out of a major €1 billion investment programme aimed at maintaining and improving Spain's state road network.
The package, approved by the Council of Ministers, will fund maintenance work on almost 3,700 kilometres of roads and motorways across ten autonomous communities. However, Murcia is not among the regions set to receive funding in this first round.
The Ministry of Transport has said a second package worth a further €600 million is planned, although it has not yet confirmed which areas will benefit or how much funding, if any, could be allocated to Murcia.
The omission is likely to raise eyebrows given the condition of many roads across the Region. According to a recent report by the Spanish Road Association, Murcia has some of the worst roads in the country, ranking fifth nationally for poor road conditions.
The report found that 37% of roads are in very poor condition, while a further 21% are considered to be in a critical state and in need of urgent attention.
Not all investment has bypassed the Region in recent years. In 2025, the Ministry approved €32.7 million for improvement works on 122 kilometres of state-owned roads in Murcia, with projects scheduled over a three-year period.
Work is also continuing on the addition of a fourth lane on part of Murcia's western ring road to help ease congestion around the connection with the Murcia-Alcantarilla motorway. Noise barriers are also being installed on several motorway sections.
The newly announced contracts will cover road maintenance and conservation work in communities including the Valencian Community, Andalucia, Madrid, Galicia, Catalonia, Aragón, Asturias, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and La Rioja.
The projects are expected to run for an initial three years, with options to extend them further. The Ministry said the contracts include measures aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions, while helping to maintain road safety and traffic flow across the national network.
For now, Murcia's hopes rest on the second round of funding, with local authorities and motorists alike waiting to see whether the Region will secure a share of the additional €600 million package.
