Storm warnings in the Murcia Region as temperatures drop by up to 10 degrees
Yellow weather warnings are in place for storms and heavy rain, while temperatures could fall by up to 10 degrees in parts of the Region within 24 hours

After days of late-summer heat, the Region of Murcia is about to see a change in the weather, with thunderstorms, heavy showers and much cooler temperatures on the way.
The first yellow warnings from AEMET are in force on Wednesday September 16 in the north-west of the Region, where heavy rain and thunderstorms are possible between 2:00pm and 10:00pm.
Forecasters say up to 15mm of rain could fall in an hour, with a 40% to 70% chance of storms developing during the afternoon and evening.
AEMET has also warned that some storms could be stronger than expected in isolated areas, bringing strong winds and the possibility of hail.
While inland areas may see unsettled weather on Wednesday, much of the Region will still feel quite summery. Murcia city is expected to reach 34°C, with temperatures around 33°C in Caravaca de la Cruz and Yecla, 32°C in Lorca and 30°C in Cartagena.

The biggest change arrives on Thursday September 17, when a cooler air mass moves across south-east Spain. Yellow warnings for rain and storms have already been extended to cover the whole of the Region from 3:00am until 8:00pm.
Rainfall could again reach 15mm in an hour in the Altiplano, north-west, Vega del Segura and the Guadalentín Valley, including Lorca and Águilas. In the Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón areas, heavier downpours are possible, with up to 25mm expected in an hour.
Temperatures are also set to fall. Murcia city could drop from 34 °C on Wednesday to 25 °C on Thursday, while Caravaca de la Cruz may see a fall from 33 °C to 23 °C. Yecla is forecast to drop by 8 degrees, Lorca by 6 degrees and Cartagena by a more modest 3 degrees thanks to the influence of the sea.
For many residents, it will be the first real taste of autumn after a long spell of warm weather. The coast is likely to stay milder, but it will feel much cooler inland, with fresher air, cloudier skies and the chance of showers replacing the recent heat.
Keep an eye on AEMET and the Región de Murcia’s emergency services for the latest updates, as forecasts and warnings can change.
