Up to €5,500 available as Spain opens new electric vehicle grant scheme
Applications are now open for the Auto+ Plan, with grants available for electric cars, vans, motorcycles and quadricycles purchased since January

Drivers thinking about switching to an electric vehicle can now apply for Spain's new Auto+ Plan, with grants of up to €5,500 available towards the cost of buying a new vehicle.
The application system officially opened at 10am on Tuesday August 4 following months of anticipation. Backed by a €350 million government fund, the scheme is designed to encourage more people to make the switch to electric transport.
One of the biggest advantages is that the grants are retroactive to January 1, 2026, meaning anyone who has already bought an eligible vehicle this year should still qualify for financial support.
The scheme is aimed at private buyers, self-employed workers, small businesses and micro-companies, with applications processed online on a first come, first served basis until the funding runs out.
For most buyers, the maximum state grant is €4,500 towards a fully electric passenger car or €5,000 for an electric van or light commercial vehicle. In addition, participating dealerships can offer a further €1,000 discount, meaning savings of up to €5,500 on an eligible electric car.
The scheme also covers plug-in hybrid cars, electric motorcycles and electric quadricycles, although the grants are lower. Motorcycles qualify for up to €1,100, while electric quadricycles can receive up to €1,500.
Not every vehicle will qualify for the maximum payment, though. The amount awarded depends on several factors, including the type of vehicle, its purchase price and where it and its battery were manufactured.
Fully electric vehicles receive the highest level of support, while plug-in hybrids are eligible for smaller grants. To receive the full amount, passenger cars must also cost no more than €45,000 before VAT, with the highest level of support reserved for vehicles priced below €35,000.
The government is also encouraging European manufacturing. Buyers can receive a higher grant if the vehicle has been built or assembled in Europe, with additional support available where the battery has also been produced in Europe.
Applications must be submitted electronically through the Ministry of Industry and Tourism's dedicated online platform. Buyers can also apply through participating dealerships, leasing companies and long-term rental providers.
The government has confirmed that a separate phase of the Auto+ Plan aimed at larger businesses will be launched after the summer as part of Spain's wider Auto 2030 strategy.
