Wildlife trafficking network shut down in Málaga

A network involved in the illegal trade of protected animal species has been taken down in Málaga, with 17 endangered animals seized.

The Guardia Civil is looking into 26 people, in Málaga, involved in wildlife crimes in the area. Operation “Faunus,” led to the recovery of several animals, including birds of prey, turtles, a marmoset monkey, crocodiles, and even a flamingo. Other items found include zebra skins, caracal fur (a wild cat native to Africa), and tortoise shells.

The Guardia Civil said some of the animals were being sold online without any proof of their legal origin, which is against the law. The authorities also seized illegal firearms, fishing gear, and other banned equipment such as nets and glue used to catch animals.

In addition, 24 wildlife crimes were uncovered, including poaching, fishing during closed seasons, and possession and trafficking of protected species. Authorities carried out 116 checks in total, 46 of which were for fishing and 70 for hunting. They discovered 141 administrative violations, such as hunting and fishing in prohibited areas, a lack of licenses and also failure to comply with safety measures.

It was also found that some of the suspects were using unregistered boats to carry out their illegal activities and had previously been arrested and banned for similar offences. As a result, they are now facing extra charges.

The investigation was led by the Seprona Nature Protection Service, in coordination with the Málaga Environmental Prosecutor’s Office.
