British man arrested in Lanzarote after officers discover suitcase full of marijuana

The 27-year-old was stopped during a routine baggage check when police noticed his luggage seemed unusually light for its size

A British tourist has been arrested at Lanzarote Airport after Guardia Civil officers discovered four kilos of marijuana hidden in his suitcase.

The 27-year-old man was stopped during a routine inspection of luggage at Terminal 2, which handles inter-island flights. Officers were carrying out standard anti-smuggling checks when one particular suitcase stood out, not because it was heavy, but because it seemed too light for its size.

To make matters more suspicious, the bag also had a strong and distinctive smell. After identifying the passenger, officers opened the case in his presence and found four large, vacuum-packed bags, each containing around one kilo of cannabis buds.

In total, the haul weighed four kilograms and is estimated to be worth over €7,200.

The arrest took place in the “Patio de Carrillos” zone, an area used for baggage inspections at Lanzarote’s Terminal T2. The drugs were reportedly destined for another Canary Island, with the suitcase tagged for a flight to Tenerife South’s Reina Sofía Airport.

The man was taken into custody and appeared before the duty court in Arrecife, where he is under investigation for an alleged offence against public health. Judicial proceedings are ongoing.
